Turbulence Radar is built on open data. We are grateful to the people and agencies who publish it. Here is what we use and how it is licensed.

ECMWF open data

Our forecasts start from the global model of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

This service is based on data and products of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

ECMWF does not accept any liability whatsoever for any error or omission in the data, their availability, or for any loss or damage arising from their use.

Modified: we compute our own turbulence indices (wind shear, deformation, stability, storm and mountain-wave checks) from the ECMWF fields, combine them into a ride score, and interpolate it along flight paths.

NOAA Aviation Weather Center

Pilot reports come from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov). This information is in the U.S. public domain. We use it to show what pilots are feeling near your route and to check our accuracy every day. NOAA does not endorse Turbulence Radar.

Airports and places

Airport codes, locations and time zones come from the open Airports database by mwgg (MIT License, copyright 2014 mwgg). Place names along your route (“over Colorado”, “over the North Atlantic”) come from Natural Earth (public domain). We will list every new source here before we use it.
